FAQ

WHO WILL CARRY OUT ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING?

Activities will be carried out by separate entities, with complementary roles.
Environmental, territorial and social monitoring activities for the Strait of Messina Bridge and the related road and rail connections are carried out by separate entities, with complementary roles, during the various phases of the project: pre-construction (ante operam), construction and operational (post operam).
Monitoring will be the responsibility of:
the General Contractor, contracted to design and build the bridge and tasked with the monitoring of worksites directly affected by construction work;
the Environmental Monitor, tasked with monitoring the wider area, covering the surrounding territory or areas beyond those directly impacted by worksites.
This approach will ensure monitoring at both local level, including areas directly impacted by worksites, and over a wider area. The system covers a total of approximately 100 km² of land area and approximately 1,600 km² of sea area, and is useful in distinguishing between the impact of the project and unrelated changes in the surrounding environment.
The organisational structure for monitoring also provides for the Operator’s involvement in the form of general oversight, coordination with government entities and public relations. A Project Management Consultant (PMC) has also been appointed to provide the Operator with technical support and oversee the activities.
This organisational arrangement is designed to ensure the effective conduct of environmental monitoring in terms of control, audit, data traceability and support for decision-making.
