WHAT IS “PHASED” DETAILED DESIGN?

The design process for major infrastructure projects involves several stages that identify increasing depths of design.
Detailed design is the phase in which construction details are determined and is carried out once the feasibility of the project has been established. Detailed Design by phased construction is an international best practice aimed at optimizing construction, controlling timings and reducing costs. In the case of the Strait of Messina Bridge, where the technical feasibility and cost estimations are already clear, and given the project’s complexity, the work will be divided into several phases: the advanced works, the environmental support works and the terrestrial links. The Bridge itself, including the towers, anchor blocks and deck assembly, will be part of a single design phase.
