STRETTO DI MESSINA AT THE 12TH WORLD CONGRESS ON HIGH-SPEED RAIL IN BEIJING
The 12th World Congress on High-Speed Rail, organised by the International Union of Railways (UIC), the international organisation which represents rail transport operators and railway infrastructure managers at global level, was held at the Beijing Convention Centre from 8 to 11 July 2025.
The Congress, which takes place every two years, is one of the most important global events for the high-speed rail industry. The event brings together experts, technicians and researchers from all around the world to discuss the main technological innovations and best practices related to the design, construction and operation of railway infrastructure.

In this prestigious context, Stretto di Messina was represented by Marcella Di Mario, engineer, who presented “The track on the Strait of Messina Bridge: the reasons for the design choice and the implications for maintenance”, an abstract that describes the design of the Strait of Messina Bridge with particular reference to the railway deck. On this occasion, the embedded rail superstructure was presented. This innovative technical solution, specially chosen for the construction of the Strait of Messina Bridge, is able to guarantee rail traffic safety, and offers the advantages of reduced weight compared to traditional types of superstructure, improved comfort for passengers, lower acoustic and vibrational impact, and high maintenance efficiency.
Stretto di Messina’s participation at the Congress marks recognition of the technical and scientific value of the Bridge project, given the interest aroused in the international scientific community by the technical solutions put forward, and the central role that the infrastructure project will play in the development of European high-speed rail transport networks, in line with the most advanced global standards.
