WHAT IS THE MESSINA STYLE?

Numerous large-span bridges, already built, under construction, or planned for the future, are based on the studies and technical solutions developed for the Strait of Messina Bridge. Beginning with the 1992 general plan developed by Stretto di Messina, the design principles and results achieved for this project have been presented internationally, generating considerable interest and spurring the development of studies and initiatives that, over the following decades, led to major achievements.

The deck of the Strait of Messina Bridge (known as the “Messina-style deck”) is a multi-box girder deck with a wing profile, enabling it to span more than 3,000 meters while withstanding strong winds. The deck consists of three longitudinal caissons (two for road traffic and one for rail traffic) connected by transverse members placed every 30 meters. Between the longitudinal caissons are large open spaces that allow airflow to pass through, reducing the wind resistance of the structure. Another key factor contributing to the deck’s stability against wind is the aerodynamic barriers, specially designed for the bridge, placed outside the service lanes to ensure high driving comfort.

The 1992 general plan, which presented an innovative vision with no prior applications, remains highly relevant today. It is only in recent years that this vision has been realized in globally completed projects, with the prospect of further applications, establishing itself as an indispensable reference in the international landscape of very large-span bridges. “Messina style” bridges can be found in China, Hong Kong, North Korea, the United States, and Turkey.

The final design of the Bridge of 2024 is the result of successive insights and the integration of the most advanced technologies. It is a synthesis of the highest knowledge in the field of suspension bridges, establishing itself as one of the leading global standards.
