STRAIT OF MESSINA BRIDGE: SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE REAFFIRMS OK FOR PROJECT’S TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY
Rome, 29 January 2025
Within the context of its periodic meetings, the Scientific Committee has reiterated its confirmation of the bridge’s technical feasibility. The body, established by law to provide technical advice and consisting of nine experts in subject areas linked to construction of the Strait of Messina Bridge (Geology, Geotechnics, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Wind Engineering, Construction Science, Structural Engineering), has unanimously reiterated its favourable opinion on the project, published in January 2024, in response to a number of recent observations on the final design. It also repeated that its 68 recommendations, in part echoing the views expressed by the previous Scientific Committee, are by no means at odds with the favourable opinion, but rather relate to matters to be dealt with in greater depth in the detailed design and do not affect the Bridge’s technical feasibility. The Bridge, stressed the nine experts, is one of the world’s most studied projects and has produced a remarkable wealth of data.
