PROCUREMENT OF WATER FOR USE DURING CONSTRUCTION OF THE STRAIT OF MESSINA BRIDGE DISCUSSED DURING “BRIDGE” COMMITTEE HEARING AT MESSINA MUNICIPAL COUNCIL
Messina, 11 March 2025
During the meeting, Stretto di Messina’s engineers, Gioacchino Lucangeli, Chief Road Design Engineer and Head of Expropriation, and Daniele Scammacca, explained that the project will not affect the city’s water supply. On the contrary, it will produce a surplus both during construction and once the work has been completed.
- Worksite needs will be met through the deployment of infrastructure that will continue to be available for use by the community once work has ended, producing a benefit in terms of available water resources.
- Three wellfields will be built along the Ionian backbone. The water extracted will be channelled through the Fiumefreddo pipeline, supplying both the worksites and the water network operated by AMAM (the municipal water company that serves Messina).
- Of the 160 litres a second extracted via the new wells, 67 will be used by the worksites and 93 by the local community.
This is a strategic project for the Municipality of Messina which, in addition to providing the water needed during construction, will leave behind infrastructure of use to the local community.
