WILL THE STRAIT OF MESSINA BRIDGE REMAIN OPEN TO TRAFFIC DURING PERIODS OF STRONG WIND?
The Strait of Messina Bridge will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no traffic disruptions caused by wind. This is made possible by the special aerodynamic design of the deck and wind barriers, which ensure user safety. In fact, the bridge is designed built to withstand winds of up to 216 km/h, a speed that has not been recorded in over twenty years of wind monitoring. Bridge closures are only expected in exceptional circumstances, such as when average wind speeds exceed 170 km/h, a scenario that statistically occurs once every 200 years in the Strait of Messina.
