WHY WAS A SUSPENSION BRIDGE CHOSEN OVER ANOTHER TYPE OF INFRASTRUCTURE?

The decision to build a stable crossing of the Strait of Messina by means of a suspension bridge came after decades of study. A thorough process of analysis and evaluation was conducted to assess the feasibility and technical and economic viability of various alternatives. The feasibility studies considered not only the chosen design but also other options, such as a multi-span bridge, an underwater or a subsea tunnel. The selected solution—a single-span suspension bridge—was determined to offer the highest guarantees in terms of safety and reliability, including construction feasibility. It also provides the best balance between cost and construction time, along with significantly lower operating and maintenance costs compared to the other alternatives considered.
