AS PART OF THE EU SCAN-MED CORRIDOR, WILL EUROPEAN FUNDS BE AVAILABLE TO FINANCE CONSTRUCTION OF THE STRAIT OF MESSINA BRIDGE?

In 2024, the European Council reaffirmed the inclusion of the Strait of Messina Bridge as a key infrastructure project within the “Scandinavian-Mediterranean” corridor. Additionally, Stretto di Messina participated in and won a European call for proposals – Connecting Europe Facility for Transport – open to all EU countries for transport project funding. The European Commission has allocated €25 million to fund the detailed design of the railway component —an important recognition of the project’s significance. The EU emphasized the project’s collective interest, highlighting its impact on the four key objectives of the TEN-T corridors: cohesion, efficiency, sustainability, and increased benefits for users. This funding, along with the European Council’s inclusion of the Bridge in the “Scandinavian-Mediterranean” corridor, reaffirms the project’s strategic role for Europe. It also opens the possibility of securing additional EU contributions to help finance the Bridge’s construction, thereby reducing the cost for the State.
